Sounding Joy: Hearing Aids for Children in Need
Better hearing can change a child's life — and through our partnership with Sounding Joy, Physicians Hearing Clinic helps make that change reachable for Sarasota families who couldn't otherwise afford it. The nonprofit funds hearing aids for children in need so cost never decides whether a child can hear in the classroom or at the dinner table. As a local hearing aid charity partner, our doctors fit and follow each qualifying child long after the devices go in.
Special Olympics Healthy Hearing Along the Gulf Coast
Dr. Tonya Steed serves as Director for Special Olympics Healthy Hearing — the program that brings free hearing screenings and ear-care education to Special Olympics athletes along the Gulf Coast. Each event puts a doctorate-trained audiologist face-to-face with athletes who might otherwise wait years for an evaluation. The work is hands-on and rooted in the same belief that drives the practice: every athlete deserves to hear their coach, their teammates, and their own success.

Community FAQs
How Physicians Hearing Clinic gives back across Sarasota — from the Sounding Joy pediatric hearing aid charity to Special Olympics Healthy Hearing screenings and beyond.
Sounding Joy is a nonprofit that funds hearing aids for children whose families can't afford them. Families apply through the organization, and once a child qualifies, Sounding Joy partners with a participating audiology practice — like Physicians Hearing Clinic here in Sarasota — to evaluate the child, recommend an appropriate device, and provide ongoing fitting and follow-up care.
We donate the clinical time so every funded dollar goes further. To explore eligibility for your child or learn how you can support the program, call our office at (941) 342-9494 and we'll walk you through the next step.
Healthy Hearing is one of the discipline programs inside Special Olympics' Healthy Athletes initiative — free hearing screenings, ear-care education, and referrals for athletes with intellectual disabilities. Many athletes have never had a formal hearing test before showing up at a Healthy Hearing event, and what we catch on game day often unlocks better communication with coaches, family, and teammates for years afterward.
Dr. Tonya Steed serves as a Director for the Gulf Coast program. The work is volunteer, hands-on, and built around the belief that hearing care should reach every athlete — not just the ones who can navigate the healthcare system on their own.
Start by reaching out to Sounding Joy directly to begin the application — that's where families confirm eligibility and the nonprofit lines up funding for the devices. Once a child is approved and matched with Physicians Hearing Clinic, we handle the clinical side: a full pediatric hearing evaluation, hearing aid selection across our six carried brands, fitting, and ongoing follow-up.
Pediatricians, teachers, school nurses, and parents are all welcome to point a Sarasota family our way. Call (941) 342-9494 if you'd like guidance before you apply, and we'll help you understand what to expect.
Yes. Beyond Sounding Joy and Special Olympics Healthy Hearing, Dr. Tonya Steed has been recognized as a volunteer of the year through Sertoma — a service organization with a national focus on hearing health — and the practice supports a rotating list of Sarasota-area nonprofits, school programs, and senior-care initiatives throughout the year.
If your Sarasota or Manatee County organization could use an audiologist's help — a hearing-health screening day, a community talk, or sponsorship guidance — reach out at (941) 342-9494 and we'll see what we can do.
